Re: Hell

l.a.providence  -  Ask and ye shall receive.  Here's one for you that shows that "everlasting" is not forever and ever with no ending point.  Look at Numbers 25:10-13 in just about any translation you want to check out.  I'll give it in the KJV, in case you are particular that way.  This is the story of Phinehas who zealously slew those two who were, ummm, "worshipping" in the tent.  One javelin took out both of them at once.

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.  Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of AN EVERLASTING PRIESTHOOD; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel."

God kept this promise of an "everlasting" high priesthood for the descendants of Phinehas, even after the post-exilic temple was set up.  At that point in time, only those from the family of Zadok were allowed to fill the position of high priest, because they had not gone after idolatry during the 70 years of exile as their brethren the other Levites had done (see Ezekiel 44:15).  Joshua, the one who officiated as high priest in this post-exilic temple built by Zerubbabel came from Zadok ancestry through his father Jehozedek.   Zadok's family line went all the way back to - you guessed it - Phinehas.  So, God was still faithfully keeping His promise at that point to Phinehas and his descendants.

But did this "everlasting" high priesthood have literally no ending to it?  We all know that when Christ became the high priest for us, He became the minister of the New Covenant.  Because there was a change in who would be the high priest over that New Covenant, there was a change in the law (Hebrews 7:12).  Christ was a high priest after the different order of Melchizedek; one with an endless life - ...
